Is the Warby Parker Eye Exam a Legitimate Exam?

Is the Warby Parker Eye Exam a Legitimate Exam?

Warby Parker has been in the eyewear retail market since 2010. Today, many of their stores also offer eye exams. There are three different options available, all of which are performed by optometrists.

The short answer to “Is the Warby Parker eye exam legitimate?” is yes. However, there are some important differences between these and other examinations that are performed by more highly qualified clinical professionals.

The three different Warby Parker eye exam options

Warby Parker offers three types of eye examinations at many of their outlets. These are:

  • An online prescription check: As the name suggests, this is carried out remotely. It uses automated app technology to determine your prescription.
  • An in-store prescription check: This is performed by an optometrist at one of the Warby Parker outlets. This involves a visual acuity assessment (using a Snellen chart) and any necessary prescription updates.
  • An in-store eye examination: Also carried out by an optometrist, this is an exam that looks at the health of the eye as well as checking your visual acuity. The optometrist will use various instruments to get a closer look at the interior of your eye. If necessary, drops will be applied to dilate the pupil. Certain eye disorders can be diagnosed and treated by the optometrist. However, conditions that are outside their scope of practice will mean you’ll need to be referred to an ophthalmologist. Your prescription will also be checked and altered if necessary.

What is an optometrist?

An optometrist is a qualified individual who’s been trained in primary health care for the eyes and vision. Following regular college education, they undertake a four-year professional program that culminates in a Doctor of Optometry degree. They may also undergo additional clinical training and/or study for a specialty fellowship.

Optometrists can also specialize in their field. For example, those who’ve trained to work with children and babies are known as pediatric optometrists.

An ophthalmologist, on the other hand, is required to undertake a full medical program before specializing in the field of vision. This adds an extra four to seven years to their medical degree—meaning around 12 years of study to achieve their qualification. They can perform all surgical eye procedures, including cataracts, glaucoma treatment, retinal reattachment, and more.

Is a Warby Parker eye exam worth it?

Whatever your age, having a detailed eye examination at least every two years is essential. Warby Parker optometrists are qualified clinical personnel and the price of their in-store eye examination is very reasonable. They’re also recognized by most insurance companies.

In conclusion, yes, a Warby Parker eye exam is worth the money. However, if you have any underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, etc., then you might prefer to partner with an ophthalmologist for your routine eye care. This will lead to continuity of care should the need for any surgical treatment arise.
